Ryder Hesjedal Attempts Record Breaking Climb Up Haleakala Crater

Haleakala Crater sits on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The route to the top for the record books is 60 km (36 miles) long and climbs 3048 meters (10,000 feet). One section of road that comprises the route is infamous as the steepest paved road on earth.

The record time to the top was first set in 1993 by Jonathan Vaughters at around 2 hours 38 minutes. This January, Garmin/Chipotle rider Ryder Hesjedal set his sights on breaking the record. Watch the footage, created by Media One Multimedia, of his first attempt up the climb:

dude, is that PowerTap data for real on Ryder H trying to set the Hawiaan crater ascent record? I met and talked to Ryder way back when he raced Mtb in Wisconsin, and he just looked so thin and frail but wholly crap average 345 watts for 2 and half hours. I am really struggling this winter with my goal to achieve a 300 watt average for 30 minutes not to mention the fact that I am at least 25 kilos heavier than Ryder. Currently my last test was 292, and I rode my guts out to do that and was wasted for 2 days after. Puts things in perspective for me at the pro level, and its not like Ryder is a rock star in pro cycling. Godspeed, just a lowly weekend warrior

Very inspiring! Here in the Blue Ridge mountains, we can only go up to 6000 or so feet. A friend who happens to be a former Cat 1 did that same ride up in Maui years ago. Epic was the word he used to describe the ascent. Nothing like around here.
Way to blow your boss out of the water!
You are headed for more great achievements!
