Will Smith a professional triathlete from New Zealand has endured numerous obstacles and is back with a vengeance to the sport.
A decade ago, Will was the youngest person in New Zealand's history to have the misfortune of developing a unique form of Parotid gland cancer. After a handful of neighbors died from the disease including his cousin and aunt, they believe the cancer developed from pesticides that were sprayed early mornings on the golf course located across the street and where Will ran most days.
Within 3 weeks of finishing radiation, Will won New Zealand's equivalent of their High School Triathlon Championships. In the ITU World Junior Championships that year, Will was the youngest member of New Zealand's team and finished a modest 16th overall. The next 2 years, will repeated as the NZ Junior Champ and finished 4th both years at the ITU World Junior Championships. 1998 marked the beginning of Will's professional career when he won the NZ Sprint Triathlon Champs as well as the NZ Olympic Triathlon Champs. Also that year, he finished 4th at ITU Bermuda, and 6th at ITU Cancun. Will had consecutive years of solid performances and then after meeting his wife and moving to the USA, took a few years off from the sport.
2006 was a solid but cautious year back to the sport and 2007 will be an exciting year filled with marquee triathlons as well as some dabbling in the world of professional cycling...
